Hi, please

Stalker map no more?

So, no matter where I look, I can only find archived images of the stalker map (see above).  The link that is in archived articles is gawker.com/stalker – but when I go there, it redirects to gawker.com/tag/stalker, which is just a  list of  people’s tips.

I’ve searched archives of news, the Gawker site, everywhere I can think of basically, and I can’t find the map!  This leads me to several questions, of course.  Have they taken it down?  If so, why wasn’t there any press about it at all?  If it’s somewhere and I just can’t find it, then it is really, really well hidden.  George Clooney’s very public fight with Gawker is well publicized, so maybe enough celebrities complained it was a violation of privacy and they nixed the map?  I will continue hunting…  As Mushon mentioned in his comment on my “ask a question” post, the thing about the stalker map is that when celebrities (or anyone, really) are walking down the street they COULD tweet about where they are, or play foursquare, or otherwise disclose their location – but they don’t always choose to.  If someone else reveals their location, that’s another story.

Oh no! That’s so weird- I wonder what happened? They’re being awfully hush-hush with it if they did just take it down. I wonder if they were threatened by someone for something that was published on Gawker Stalker and they’re trying to keep it on the down-low? Although, it’s very weird that the tag page is still there. Maybe it’s just a maintenance issue that’s in the process of being fixed? Keep us informed!

    A -

I am always in for an investigative challenge on the web – and I am stumped as well. I was unable to find the gawker stalker map. Now that I know such a tool exists, I must indulge when I do have a few minutes of boredom during my lunch to see what the celebrities are up to. I have seen many celebrities in the are I work and never thought to actually provide the information via web/mobile etc… I personally believe its an invasion of privacy of some sorts.. My brother introduced me to a new google product, called latitude. I’m sure you all know what is. If not check it out here. I always worry about my younger brother because he tends to do alot of driving for his work so he had me join this option through google and we can actually see where we are at all times. I call it the “sibling” stalker ha ha. I must have used it at least 20 times to see where he was and track his movements! Let me know if you find something and I will keep you in the loop as well. There is no such thing as “hush hush” on the web!!

I think it definitely warrants some additional digging to find out if it is actually down now and if so, why it had to go down. Was it a legal issue? Was it because of technical issues? Or was there just not as much demand as people thought there to be?

This is a mystery! Apparently there is no mention of the map being removed in any news story or website in the past week at least.
I just emailed the editor-in-chief and messaged someone I know who interns at Gawker. Let’s see.

Woah thanks Harris, I’m glad you have a connection there so hopefully that will help us figure this out. Please keep us posted on what you hear.

Great collective action I would say!
I can’t wait for the answers to Harris’ mails.
Although I doubt that their answer will be very reliable. I agree with Leslie and kind of think this mysterious disappearance has to do with blackmail or some kind of pressure from a Star Lobby/Union…
