We’re all well ahead in our third and rich travelogue, two weeks in, two more to go + Next week’s subject is Network Theory!

I am not giving you any general instructions this week, as you’re each doing your own thing. I do expect one post from you though, for some it would be a weekly audio / video / visual / locative post, and for some just an update on your longer (video/software…) project (ask me if you feel unsure about what’s expected from you). Either way, each of you please comment 4 times this week on your friend’s posts.

Some important tip for video & audio podcast

Video / Audio Formats – iTunes (for both Mac & PC) has an option to ’save for ipod & iphone’ (for video) & to ‘convert to MP3′ (for audio). Both of these options will make your podcasts compatible with most podcasting devices and more accessible by all of us. By the way, to subscribe to our podcast feed use this link with iTunes (or other podcast aggregation):

http://cultureandcommunication.org/f09/tdm/feed/podcast

Be casual, not too casual – I found that some of you have written your text in advanced and are simply reading it out. It works for some of you (most of you actually), but less for others. On the other hand some of you were making it up as you went, which again, worked for some, not for all. I think the recommendations on this site might be relevant both for screencasts, vodcasts and for podcasts. Either way, building a bullet-pointed scenario cannot be a bad idea, as it would leave you some more freedom from the tight text while keeping you on the right track. Remember, you are not making an audio-book.

You are beautiful – But ask yourselves, do we really need to see your faces? Maybe we do, but maybe the frame can be better used to support your content visually, screencasts are a good example for that, when they fit. If you don’t really have anything to show, maybe video is not the medium you need, maybe stick to voice only… think about it.

Support your media – rich media is rich, but it can’t do everything, for example, it usually cannot link to a site. If you want us to get more informed, link to the relevant content in your posts.

Share your experiences – Feel free to comment on this post, or even write a whole new one if you think there are other things you’ve learned that others can enjoy from.

Add to the Resources page – Some of the titles there are still unpopulated, we want to document the techniques you are using so they can be shared by all. Please edit the page.

I decided to start out this last travelogue with the question: “What is humor?”. Well, there are a lot of definitions out there, but I think the most important quality is that it is socially constructed – things are funny because the people around us think their funny. Maintaining social humor helps build rapport and community.

To start out, a very non-digital media example:

This summer I read a classic ethnography called Guests of the Sheik by Elizabeth Warnock Fernea. It was published in the mid ’60s, long before inexpensive, near-instantaneous, global, transcultural communication was made possible by the Internet. Fernea traveled to Iraq in the late ’50s as a young newly-wed to join her husband, an anthropologist. The book details her struggle trying to learn the language, culture, and etiquette of women living in a rural Iraqi village. Fernea’s diligent attempts to become a member of the community don’t go very well for her at first. After many months, she begins to grasp enough of the language and culture to learn that the women, while seemingly polite, have been making fun of her the whole time – right to her face! And it isn’t until she is able to crack her own jokes on the women that they begin to accept her, and begin to consider her a whole person.

I like this story because I think it illustrates how important humor is in tying members of communities together – it operates almost as a kind of language, fostering shared emotion and social memories, and building or strengthening relationships.

Back to the digital realm.

When you’re using the internet, you’re usually (at least physically) by yourself. If you’re interacting with people, there’s a good chance you’ve never met them. Humor helps to ease your interaction with these people – creating common ground everyone involved can feel good about.

Take a look at this nostalgic slideshow I made.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Remember these guys? Oh man, classic lolcats. They’re soooo funny and adorable. Remember when they first started making rounds on the internet? Totally. Those were the days.

Okay, see what I just did there? We just shared a social memory – most of the people reading this probably saw some of those little cats a couple of years ago… Most of us (probably none of us, in fact) knew each other back then, but now we can say we’ve all laughed together at those adorable cats. I hate to break it to you, but we just shared a special moment, guys. And I hope we’re all better friends because of it.

But what’s really interesting is when something hilarious breaks free from the cyberworld and invades the real world – using cybersocial humor to build offline relationships!

Here’s a personal example, which might be annoying, but I think it’s funny, so… I feel it’s appropriate for this post. You can skip it if you want, though.

It was October 2003. I don’t know about you, but I was starting my junior year of college, and homestarrunner.com was pretty big (at least on my campus). This Teen Girl Squad short had just aired in May. (the whole thing is pretty classic, but the part relevant to this tidbit begins at 1:15.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I was struggling to stay awake through my service fraternity’s weekly meeting on a Tuesday night, and some girls announced that they had to leave early and did so. A few minutes later they came rushing back to the room. They announced, “Guys. We were just passing Morton Hall and we saw a possum!” The entire room (we’re talking at least 100 people) immediately and spontaneously responded, “POSSUMS” a la Strongbad, and we all laughed, acknowledging that something special, nay, magical, had happened.

I think this illustrates how the cyberworld and real world are not separate spheres, but two parts of a social environment. On it’s own, the event of crossing paths with a possum is not a big deal. But combined with the internet video, something we all loved and had quoted for weeks on end, it was important enough to this social environment for those girls to rush across campus back to the boring meeting and tell us they met a possum.

I think it shows that humor can successfully bridge the gap between the on- and off-line parts of this social environment. Going back to my question last week (”what does humor on the internet accomplish?”), I think this is a big check mark. As personal relationships become increasingly mediated through the internet, it’s important that we have ways to communicate successfully, and humor is one part of accomplishing this.Similar Posts:

I decided this week that the main component of my final travelogue would be the weekly podcast. I think that I’m simply more effective in that medium. The cartoon will supplement the podcast, while hopefully being humorous and somewhat thought provoking.

After listening to the podcasts, feel free to discuss any of the issues here or in the classroom. Also, welcoming suggestions & criticism.Similar Posts:

Travelogue

We’re deep in Travelogue 4 with some really fascinating researches proposed and some very interesting ideas for uses of the media. The rich posts are sometimes more time consuming, both on the producer and the consumer, so I want us to have enough time to explore and comment on them. That’s why I recommend you guys to post by Sunday (preferably earlier) and leave Monday and Tuesday for commenting. Here are some optional deadlines:

By Sunday: Post your new rich travelogue post. Remember, the content needs to be mainly non textual. By that I mean, non-typed posts. Verbal podcasts are legit. Including transcripts is more than recommended.

By Classtime: Comment on at least 4 posts. Rich comments are also legit (though not a must).

Skillshare Workshop

We will meet on Thursday, 3:30pm in the conference room in the MCC offices (). Some of the optional things we can discuss:

Slidesharing

Embedding image galleries in the blog

User generated maps

How to get your own blog

How to find geeky stuff online and make yourself an eternal self-sufficient learner

_________

I want this to be a collaborative effort, so please bring your laptops and do some research on the media you might want to use so you can bring some more knowledge into the classroom. Each of you please make sure you have at least one tip to contribute to the class, even if it’s not techie (how

The cartoon is supposed to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing guarding Google’s precious search data – the data not addressed with the release of Google Dashboard. I used Aviary to create the image; it’s a free image suite akin to Photoshop (also pretty complicated! Haven’t yet figured out to color in layered imagines). The podcast is recorded with Audacity and hosted on Mediafire.

I already recognize a multitude of ways to improve the image and the podcast; the goal is to further refine each of them as the Travelogue progresses. Comments as well as criticism are appreciated.

Edit: Super irritated. I can’t figure out how to stream the podcast.Similar Posts:

Hi Class,

For the next two weeks we will be charging directly into the third travelogue. We will also be making a serious critique of Wikipedia and the peer production and 2.0 that we just loooove so much.

By this coming Sunday:

Based on the feedback you got, decide on your third travel destination.

Dive into the new media environment destination through a post laying out the current events or the relevant timely reference that points into your travelogue. Title your post with the initial question you want to inquire into. Include your initial assumptions for the nature of this environment and its culture. Try to define what norms are officially or unofficially defined within this environment and what possible practices might be used to work with or against these norms to learn more about their nature.

If you’re into Twitter (or interested to try it out), you might want to experiment with live micro-blogging as a research tool. If you come up with interesting results and methodologies, share them on our blog

Comment on at least three posts.

By Tuesday:

Optionally keep us in the know about your progress, this can be a short update or a longer one, or even a short reference to your recent travel (new finding based on comments you got, a new building you sketched up on Google Earth, a Google Wave account you got access to, a recent experience with FourSquare, or whatever) and where next does it direct you
* Posting a second time this week is encouraged but remember not to over saturate your audience’s short attention span and lack of time.

Comment a lot more (at this point I hope you don’t need numbers, numbers will always betray you, you can only trust people…)

Required listening / reading / writing / watching:

Jaron Lanier – Digital Maoism

Audio Inteview with Jaron Lanier by Andrew Keen (it’s going on and off between his critique of Wikipedia and Virtual Reality, but the relevant part starts 11:48 through):

Read Gabriel’s summaries.

Choose one of the responses to Jaron Lanier’s Digital Maoism or one of the 10 theses in the recommended reading

Write your own response to the response/theses as a comment to Gabriel’s post

For Gabriel:

Read the articles responses and listen to the interview

Summarize it for us in a nicely accessible post to be published by Sunday at 4:00pm, run some threads between them.

Be prepared to present the article and lead the discussion in class. (make some notes for yourself, even share them in a post)

Post to del.icio.us some links that expand the discussion either about the text or about key themes in it.
