TicketNation or LiveMaster?…

Here’s my addition to last week’s vodcast, sorry if it was long and not informative enough. So, successful Twittering this time from my show on Sunday night, unfortunately no footage this time, and Twitpic is apparently completely unreliable from a Blackberry…if you’re Facebook friends with me you can see a few pics…below are links to the articles i read to prepare my little monologue…as you may notice, every week my facial hair’s been getting longer…barely even recognize myself! So ive been trying to figur out this delightful tool called Shiftspace…took me a while to figure out how to use it at all…but thanks for all the comments on @gorditamedia’s post earlier this weekend, it definitely helped. Wasn’t quite sure what i wanted to critique, but ended up doing the interface of Wired.com (oh the irony of using new media to critique a website about new uses of media…), ill elt the shits speak for themselves.

Travelogue 3 Conclusion – The Future of Wave

News: Google Wave Sandbox is now open for federation

Our Experiences With the Wave

In previous Travelogue entries, we’ve twitted our way into Google Wave, gauged the public’s reaction to it, and tried to critically expose the sociocultural implications of it.  Now that I’ve used Wave a fair amount, I thought it proper to speak about my own experiences in this concluding entry.

I’ve started and joined a number of public waves to interact with/understand Wave’s users as much as to understand the software itself. Using Wave is like starting your freshman year of high school; you’re not quite sure what to expect although you have a preconceived notion that things should be better and new, and after a few visits you realize that its going to be quite a while before you (and your freshman classmates) completely figure things out. In short, this means that there is a serious learning curve.

As Google Wave is currently in preview version, many people do not have familiar users with which they can communicate or collaborate. The average user has to simply follow and create public waves; it seems that the general discourse is about how to use this new tool and what it might mean.

(H-Man)

I tend to slightly disagree with Jason in some respects, although there is a learning curve, I find it fairly easy to use Wave, especially considering the 2.0 IQ of many users nowadays. Eve my grandma (in her late 80’s) has incorporated e-mail into her everyday life (including more complex function such as MP3 attachments and what have you), there is no reason that most of the Internet surfing population would be unable to figure out Google Wave and use it to their advantage in a great number of circumstances. When one thinks of the complicated functions we are able to achieve online now, there is no doubt in my mind that Wave will not be that difficult to figure out.

Will Wave Catch On?

Ultimately, I think that wave will catch on. However with the “tl;dr” mind state of the internet, people may  put off learning to use Google Wave – or possibly ignore it all together. In the introduction of “The Complete Guide to Google Wave,” (a helpful guide manual by Gina Trapani and Adam Pash), the author(s) explain that “because Wave is mostly a document collaboration tool, the oversimplified email metaphor can mislead new users. The initial Wave experience can feel chaotic and confusing.” I think this echoes a lot of users’ sentiments – especially because of the need to use public waves.

While there is a certain level of convenience with Wave because it takes place in the browser, it seems to be incredibly taxing on my computer’s functionality (a 2-yr-old Macbook). Other programs and browser windows that are simultaneously running with Wave are constantly stalling or freezing. This might serve as a barrier to would-be users.

The conversations in Wave seem to be very cluttered. While the philosophy behind the real-time chatting seems very sound, I would probably advise Google to do away with it. You have people responding to IMs that are unfinished and often changed after responses already come.

Just as any other product, I think that Wave will need to be improved and even simplified via its early adopters.  Perhaps we’ll see a wave platform (the wave version of outlook or thunderbird). Wave will not develop best user practices and standard functions until it’s released to the public, and people begin interacting with “real life” acquaintances that they have the need for functional collaboration with (I for one see Wave monopolizing the process of collaborative note taking).  Make no mistake, because Wave is open source and readily available, I think its widespread adoption is a matter of when rather than if. I’m excited to observe Wave’s evolution.

(H-Man)

Right now, there is little to point to Wave actually becoming the true dominant platform online (as it is still at the trial stage, it is not nearly perfected yet), but it does show some serious promise. By combining pretty much all aspects of Internet communication (email, chatting, blogging, picture sharing) on one open source platform, Google certainly provides an incentive for people to sign up for it.  After messing around with the platform and watching the introduction presentation, it is not as complicated as it may seem. Once the concept of inviting everyone to the same conversation or project rather than sending out individual messages to each member is understood, the rest seemed to fall in place for me.  It is definitely more complicated than email, but by now even our grandmothers have incorporated email into their daily lives, so the incorporation of Google Wave would be fairly swift if it were to take off.

Of course, as advantageous as this may be for users (if the platform becomes more mainstream and users are accustomed to it), it is immensely advantageous to Google, as they would have a virtual monopoly, forcing companies to compete with them using their own software.  By creating such a potentially revolutionary platform, Google is trying to force the Internet to follow them, rather than the other way around. As afore mentioned, Google would be seen as a real pioneer in the (so far quite short) history of the Internet.

In short, Wave is still a pipe dream, and there are critics (Google did hype it as the 2.0 coming of Christ…), but despite Google’s plan for Internet (or world…) domination through it, it seems to be a very effective tool that truly could revolutionize online social interaction and collaborative document creation.

Tips:

  • To find a public wave search with:public in your wave-search window
  • To begin a public wave, add public@a.googlewave.com as a contact; begin a new wave and give that username access.

Wavin’ Along…

As promised, here is a little update on the use of this wonderful and controversial thing called Google Wave…As mentioned last week in class, Jason and I have acquired a copy of it, and we have started messing around with it. First off, there is only a limited amount we can do with it, as we don’t have any friends on it (which i would say is the first weakness of Wave, there aren’t that many people on it…), but we can no get an idea what it is like by being able to mess around with it and watching tutorial videos.I searched for someone whose user name i had, but was unable to find it…

google-wave-interface

The first thing i wanted to comment on is the interface, which is extremely user friendly. With the help of the shorter tutorial (not the 88 minute one!) i was able to pretty much figure out how to do basic functions. Ther are options tha are so user friendly that its almost unbelievable, you can now drag photos directly into the wave, and they appear in real time to whoever you have chosen to see your wave. By dragging the “Blogger” icon into the wave, it publishes the wave onto the website and the wave is embeddable. The livetype function is interesting, no more wasting time waiting for people to reply, and the playback function (which lets you go through from the beginning of the wave and visualize every contribution or change to it) is also very handy. You can even embed Google maps onto the wave!

Having read a few criticism of Google Wave, the main one seems to be that it is ahead of it’s time.  They tried to jump the gun and get users to switch to something that combines everything from IMing, E-Mail, Chat…basically any social function online along with document editing and collaboration. Mushon commented on our last post, and as we do more research, we will be examining WHY Google would want to create this, especially when it already has quite the lock on e-mail at the moment…to be continued, i will look forward to more comments from all of you in class.

Searching For The “Nouvelle Vague”…With Difficulty

wave

Whatup y’all? As you can probably see from the last post, Jason and I are collaborating on Travelogue 3, in which we are looking at the new Phenomenon of Google Wave. What is Google Wave?, some or you may be asking. As this article points out,  the answer is neither simple nor clear. Just the fact that we had to post (and that no shorter version exists…) the 88 minute tutorial (which we will undoubtedly have to suffer through when the time comes…) shows how difficult Google Wave is to sum up. Hope this below helps a little…

YouTube Preview Image

One of the challenging aspects of it so far is the actual acquisition of it, as it is by invitation only. Jason and I have spent most of the day on Twitter and Facebook trying to contact people and try to get  an invitation from one of them…everyone that actually DOES have it seems to be unable to send invites at this moment due to one reason or the other…I have started following all the different Google Wave affiliated groups on Twitter, and will continue to broadcast what I am looking for on both Twitter and Facebook. If any of you actually can send me and invite, or know anyone that can, hit me up at hadrien.i.turner@google.com! Thanks so much, and I of course, as always, am very open to suggestion as i toil to try to join this “super” networking/mysterious/emailing tool! I don’t wanna be a Google Wave reject!

IMAKEMADBEATS! PT. DEUX

l_1767abc2424341a7ae11165e57437679

As promised, I will delve into what  IMAKEMADBEATS (or nEmO for short)  uses to promote himself online, as it the Internet has become the most important promotional tool for promotion of music (besides the radio, but as we all know, is impossible to tap into without a SERIOUS budget…). I believe he is a very relevant representation of a successful artist that has not yet made it to stardom (despite his increeeeeedible talent), which is the stage at which a lot of artists are, and it is relevant to look at how he promotes his music with a limited budget.

IMAKEMADBEATS is a producer (beat maker in hip-hop language) that has been quite successful as of late, (he keeps his face a mystery, as you can see, though I KNOW what he looks like haha) who has worked with such illustrious artists as Pharoahe Monch, Black Milk, Von Pea (of Tanya Morgan), RZA (of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan), Phonte (of Little Brother), and Rakaa Iriscience (of Dilated Peoples) just to name a few.  He is most famous for his collab album with Roc C, “The Transcontinental“. It was released on EMI/Koch, a major label. The next album will be released independently, mostly to ensure artistic integrity and complete control of production and promotion. After talking to him, and researching on the Net, here are the tools that he uses to create online visibility and notoriety.

Blogs:

Blogs are huge in the rap world, because they are perfect at accommodating one thing that is very particular about hip-hop culture: the mixtape. Artists releasing free music is nothing new, but the conecept of the mixtape has become almost instituionalized in the world of rap.  Artists are basically expected to release at least one free album (they are now released online, they used to be sold on the streets for a minimal amount or handed out for free) to promote their upcoming release. This is somewhat controversial, as sometimes the material on the mixtape gets more critical acclaim than the actual albums that proceeds it (NaS’s last mixtape is a perfect example of this).  Some artists, such as Drake, are immensely popular and all over mainstream radio despite not having an album released yet (though they are signed to deals). Theoretically, every label would like mixtapes to boost record sales, as in the case of Lil’ wyane, who released free material for THREE YEARS before “Tha Carter III”, going platinum in less than a week.

IMAKEMADBEATS is no stranger to this phenomenon, and uses blogs to release free songs, to get his name out there, and keep people that know about him excited for upcoming projects. Last week he released a track featuring Emilio Rojas that was posted on such important hip-hop blogs as Nahright.com and 2dopeboyz.com.  What was even more interesting about it that nEmO actually told me, is that even though these blogs seem very open to material (the administrators are somewhat underground celebrities themselves, and even have their email addresses posted for submissions), apparently it is still all about publicists. They won’t post any songs that he sends them directly unless they feature a prominent MC on the track, in order to get coverage of any solo projects or ones featuring less famous lyricists, he has to go through a publicist, which he plans on doing for the upcoming release of his album. I also learned that one can get a publicist for 3 months for the marginally low cost of about $2,500, which is pennies when one thinks of how much it costs to run a “traditional” media campaign.

imakemadbeats-emilio-rojas-lets-go-ozone-mixtape-single

The use of IMAKEMADBEATS’s website is also interesting, as it has a blog layout, but has an integrated player, which allows one to listen to his music on the site as you browse news about him, as well as watch videos and read about other of his affiliates. The video is worth mentioning, as any video that he has done has gone straight to YouTube and to other blogs. This viralization of videos is extremely interesting, as they are geared for the Internet, and an artist does not need NEARLY as much cash to make one. Even popular artists will do some very low budget videos for s0ngs other than their singles, to keep interest in the other songs on their album.

Social Networks:

The first thing to notice about this is that he does not have a Facebook page.  This is unusual, although he said that it was something that he needs to get on (the fan pages are great ways to infiltrate social networks and send out constant updates to all your fans). He prefers Twitter (check him out right here!) . He has been on Twitter for about two years (much longer than most…), and uses it for both promotion and personal expression. This is what is very interesting and entertaining about following musicians and artists on Twitter. You get exclusive access to material they decide to post, but you also get some insight into what they are thinking. It gives the artist an opportunity to interact with other artists. You would be surprised how often they talk amongst themselves about collaborations, or send each other news on their projects.  In this way they are able to become more accessible, which gives them a more human dimension. I for one, would be logged in on Twitter the entire 2009 NBA playoffs, and was delighted to see how many artists that i love and respect were watching the same game as I was and tweeting about it. There is a fascinating mix or who they are personally and their persona on Twitter. It is used both socially and for business, but the lines between them get very blurred.

MySpace is also a tool he uses (right here!) , as they have a special section reserved for artists, which have integrated audio players (which can be programmed for free downloads as well, on the artist’s discretion). It gives information about the artists, as well as videos, it sort of serves a blog function (as it can integrate other videos and images, but also has room for comments).

In the end, the one thing that i really learned through this, is that you have to work extremely hard to promote yourself properly, though in order to make it big you still need help from someone such as a publicist to be able to be posted on certain websites and become known to a more general audience. However, this has also shown me that it is possible to gain a significant amount of online visibility through tools like social networks and blogs, which do not cost you a dime. It is so much easier to get yourself out there as an artist thanks to the wonderful tools of the Internet, most prominently social networks and blogs. Look for H-Man, the first proffessional rap scholar in the near future…LOL?

“Lock yourself in a room, doing 5 beats a day for 3 summers…”

To kick it off, a million apologies for being so late on this, had to travel back to the District for a while on some family matters (not the fun kind unfortunately…).

IMAKEMADBEATS LOGO for blog

Originally, as a former/current blogger (I need to get back on my game!) I had been interested in finding out how musical artists use blogs to promote themselves and express themselves personally, and of course to what extent they actually posted on their blogs themselves. After some investigation (primarily using Kanye’s blog and Kid Cudi’s blog as research), i found that it is nearly impossible to actually be able to tell if it truly IS them that is posting the material (though in some posts I do have a suspicions that it is in fact them through familiarity with their persona and lyrical content).  This led me to change my objective, and look more at how artists promote use the Internet for promotion purposes, including social networks, websites, and blogs.  I used  a good, successful hip-hop producer friend of mine, nEmO (a.k.a IMAKEMADBEATS) as an example, after meeting with him and talking to him. He was very open about it, and really let me in to how he is promoting his upcoming album, his second release.

I found it fascinating the extent to which he was handling a lot of promotion himself as an artist, as well as how he was using publicists for different matters. This also got me to raise some questions about whether or not it was better for an artist to be able to handle the promotion of his own work on his own, or if it was better for a larger label (with more capital) to take care of it all themselves. This delves into to what extent artists actually CAN be represent themselves the way they want to and still be successful.

to be continued….VERY shortly
